More information: Though 94 kills were confirmed, Juutilainen claimed 126.
34 of his kills were scored flying the “flying beer bottle,” the Brewster B-239.
Finland ordered 44 Brewsters from the United States. Originally a naval craft meant to take off from carriers, the Brewster Buffaloes sent to Finland were de-navalized. Unlike the British and Dutch airforces that suffered severe Brewster losses in the Pacific, Finland used the craft with great effectiveness against the Red Air Force in the Continuation War (1941-1944). The Brewsters of Juutilainen’s 24th Squadron claimed 477 Soviet aircraft to the loss of 19 Brewsters, a ratio of 26:1.
The Finnish Air Force used an untilted blue swastika since 1918, well before the symbol had any connotations to Nazism.
